INFORMATION

How to get there

By train:

If you want to travel by train, there are two train stations in Basel. Basel SBB is the central station where most trains from Switzerland, France, Italy etc. stop. It is located in Großbasel (city center area). From there, the tram line 8 (direction Weil am Rhein/or Basel Kleinhüningen) goes to the central venues (get off at the Ciba stop).

If you are traveling from Germany, you can get off at Badischer Bahnhof (the DB station). The station building is on German ground, as soon as you leave the building you are in Switzerland. Border and customs controls also take place at the station. The Federal Police regularly carry out checks on the tracks and in the trains. Be vigilant here! From Badischer Bahnhof, take bus line 30 (direction Basel SBB) to Feldbergstrasse station and from there tram line 8 (direction Weil am Rhein/or Basel Kleinhüningen) to the central event locations (get off at the Ciba stop).

By car:

If you are traveling by car from Germany, take the A5 towards Basel. There is a customs station at the border. Regular spot checks are carried out here and the vignettes are checked. A vignette is compulsory on the Swiss highway, which costs around 40 francs and is valid for one calendar year. To avoid the costs, you can take the Weil am Rhein/Hüningen/Euroairport exit and cross the border at the Weil am Rhein/Basel city limits. The same applies if you are coming from France. Take the A35 in the direction of Basel. If you want to avoid the costs for the Swiss highway, you can exit in St. Louis and cross the city border there.

In general, Switzerland carries out so-called automated license plate recognition on the highways. Watch out here too!

Parking in Basel is not free and we cannot provide a parking lot for the duration of the event. We therefore recommend traveling by train! However, if you are still coming by car, you can find more information about the different parking zones here: https://www.bs.ch/themen/mobilitaet/fahren-und-parkieren/wo-parkieren-basel

By airplane:

The nearest airport is EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg (BSL, EAP, MLH). Bus line 50 (direction Basel SBB) goes from the airport to Kannenfeldplatz station. There you change to streetcar line 1 (direction Dreirosenbrücke) to the final stop Dreirosenbrücke. From there the event rooms are within walking distance.

Visas

If you are arriving from a neighboring EU country and already have a visa for the Schengen area, you do not need an additional visa for Switzerland. From non-EU countries, country-specific visa requirements apply. You can find more information on visa requirements for EU citizens/non-EU citizens here: https://www.eda.admin.ch/eda/de/home/einreise-und-aufenthaltinderschweiz/informationen-zueinreiseundaufenthalt.html

Cops and border controls

Basel has several borders with France and Germany. As we have observed with horror and hatred, there have recently been more border controls on the main roads and central customs stations. At the train stations, cops are sometimes waiting at the platform. Trains from Freiburg (Regio and ICE) are also repeatedly checked with ID and sometimes luggage checks. Racial profiling occurs on a daily basis. The cops also carry out regular checks within the city. Racially motivated checks are carried out particularly on the banks of the Rhine, in the area of the Dreirosenbrücke and in the city center.

Remember that, unlike in Germany, possession of cannabis is illegal and is searched for during checks.

If you would like to find out more about organizing against the police controls in Basel, you can check out the No-More Committee: https://www.nomorekomitee.ch/de.

Getting around on site

Basel is small and easy to get around. In general, all event rooms of the fixed program, as well as the sleeping facilities and KüfA are within walking distance. So you don’t need any other means of transportation. Some of the supporting program takes place at more distant locations that are also within walking distance (max. 20-30 min). Otherwise you can use public transport. A short-distance ticket costs CHF 2.60 (3 stops) and a one-way ticket for 1 zone costs CHF 4.20 (valid for one hour). Vending machines are located at the streetcar stations and you can pay in cash (€ and CHF) or by card. There are regular large-scale checks, as well as occasional checks in plain clothes in the trams and buses. Watch out here!

Venues

The various venues are mostly located in the Kleinhüningen/Klybeck district. There will be a central information stand at Humbug (Klybeckstrasse 241/K104, 4057 Basel) where you can find out about the locations and routes. Further information and maps will be published in advance.

Network/Internet on site

There is no EU roaming in Switzerland! If you are otherwise used to being able to continue using your telephone contract in the neighboring countries, you must remember to switch off your data roaming when crossing the border! Otherwise it can be very expensive. We will provide a WLAN structure at a central location. If you use maps, download directions beforehand or use offline maps.

Currency

The Swiss currency is the Swiss franc (CHF). As Basel is a border town, in most cases you can also pay with euro bills (note: no coins!). You will then receive your change in CHF. Card payments are usually free of charge, but the exchange rate depends on the day.

Food

Food in Switzerland is expensive. We will set up a KüfA structure that will cook for you from Thursday to Sunday for lunch and dinner for a donation (vegan). There will also be a self-service breakfast buffet and a coffee trolley. If you have specific food requirements other than vegan and gluten-free, including coeliac disease, you can send us an e-mail in advance with the subject “Allergy” and we will forward it to the kitchen (please only in urgent cases!).

Sleeping

We are working hard on the organization of a camp structure. As soon as we have more information you will find it under the tab “Accommodation” on our website.
